Material Description
EN AC-47000 / AlSi12(Cu) is normally encountered in the as-cast condition, most commonly as permanent-mould or sand castings. When machining clean material, use sharp tools designed for aluminium and other non-ferrous alloys; sharp stainless-steel geometries can also work well. Sand-cast parts may have an abrasive surface layer containing residual sand, oxides or other hard inclusions, so for the initial roughing cut a more wear-resistant DLC-coated, stainless-steel or general-purpose carbide grade can be a safer choice than a very sharp polished aluminium tool. Once the casting skin has been removed and clean material is reached, switch to a dedicated aluminium/non-ferrous grade; the approximately 12% silicon content makes the alloy considerably more abrasive than common wrought aluminium alloys, and PCD can be advantageous in high-volume production.
