Material Description

EN 1.4980 / AISI 660 (A286) is an austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel alloy designed for high-strength applications at temperatures up to approximately 700 °C. It is commonly supplied in the solution-annealed condition (approximately 650 MPa) or in the precipitation-hardened condition (approximately 1030 MPa). Due to its low thermal conductivity and high nickel content, machining requires sharp, heat-resistant tools with geometries suitable for stainless steels or heat-resistant alloys. The solution-annealed condition offers better machinability, while the precipitation-hardened condition requires more wear-resistant cutting tools and generally lower cutting speeds.
