Material Description
EN 1.4828 / X15CrNiSi20-12 is a heat-resistant austenitic stainless steel with approximately 20% Cr, 12% Ni and 2% Si, intended mainly for high-temperature applications up to about 1000 °C. In machining, it behaves similarly to common austenitic stainless steel such as 1.4301 / AISI 304, so sharp stainless-steel geometries are a good choice, while universal or soft-material geometries can also be used under stable cutting conditions. Like AISI 304, it has low thermal conductivity and a tendency to work-harden, so rubbing and excessively small chip thickness should be avoided. Its machinability is slightly below or broadly comparable to AISI 304, and although its lower ductility may sometimes help chip control, long and tough chips should still be expected and an effective stainless-steel chipbreaker is recommended.
