Material Description
EN 1.4031 / X39Cr13 is a martensitic stainless steel which, in the soft-annealed condition, machines much more like a carbon steel of similar hardness than austenitic 1.4301 / AISI 304. Compared with 1.4301, it has roughly twice the thermal conductivity and significantly lower elongation, giving better heat dissipation and generally shorter, more controllable chips; machining parameters can therefore often be less conservative, although cutting speed still depends strongly on the actual hardness. Standard geometries for soft carbon steels or universal geometries are usually a very good choice, while sharp stainless-steel geometries can also be used without problems. Its relatively high carbon content provides strong hardenability; after quenching the steel develops a hard martensitic structure, and the grade is ferromagnetic.
