Material Description
1.2085 is normally supplied quenched and tempered (+QT), typically around 29–33 HRC. Although it is a corrosion-resistant stainless steel, its machining should primarily be approached according to its approximately 1000 MPa strength, with somewhat reduced cutting speed due to its relatively low thermal conductivity. The sulphur addition provides noticeably better chip breaking and easier machining than 1.2316, making universal tools and geometries for medium- to higher-strength steels an excellent choice; sharp stainless-steel geometries can also work well, while stronger grades for pre-hardened steels can provide higher tool life. The sulphur addition reduces polishability, so 1.2085 is particularly suitable for corrosion-resistant mould bases and support plates rather than highly polished mould inserts.
