Material Description
EN 1.2083 (X40Cr14 / AISI 420) is a corrosion-resistant martensitic tool steel commonly used for plastic injection moulds, mould inserts and components requiring good polishability and wear resistance. It is typically supplied soft annealed (+A) for machining before subsequent hardening to approximately 50–54 HRC. In the annealed condition, sharp universal cutting tools suitable for conventional steels are generally recommended, while sharper stainless-steel geometries can also be used effectively, especially for lighter machining and finishing. Due to its relatively low thermal conductivity, reduced cutting speeds are recommended compared to conventional carbon steels.
