Material Description
1.1730 / C45U is an unalloyed tool steel normally used in the unhardened condition for mould bases, plates, frames, jigs and general tool construction. It has very good machinability and works well with general-purpose tools; sharper geometries can also be used and tools intended for high-strength steels are normally unnecessary in the supplied condition. The material can be flame or induction hardened to approximately 58 HRC, with a typical hardened depth of around 3–5 mm, so hardened areas require tools and cutting conditions intended for hardened steels.
